Nissan Sunny Design

The facelifted Nissan Sunny can be instantly recognized by its bolder front end. The bulbous headlights are replaced with larger Boomerang shaped units. The wide Nissan front grille now comes as standard across most of the Nissan sedans and it gets a dash of chrome to liven up things at the front end, you will also find the redesigned front bumpers which further add to the glamor quotient of the sedan.

Now walk towards the side profile of the sedan and you will notice that Nissan has replaced the old ORVMs with new sleeker ones while the front apron now boasts of a more sporty and dynamic design. The top end variant gets a new 15 inch 12 spoke alloy wheels which definitely adds to the styling of the sedan furthermore. The rear too gets a chrome trunk highlight on the top end variant while the other variants gets a black Slitter which makes the humongous boot look good. The Nissan Sunny is known for its generous proportions and class-leading cabin space. The new model continues to build on its qualities by creating a more stronger and contemporary look. The numerous aero-upgrades have helped achieve a very low coefficient of drag, this also aid’s fuel economy.

Nissan Sunny Cabin

Nissan’s marketing department conducted customer clinics around the country, and another recurring demand was for leather seats; not just leather seat covers, but properly sewn leather upholstery. And so, Nissan now offers leather seats on the XV and XL CVT variants.

The dashboard has been spruced up too, with the new centre console borrowed from the new Micra hatch, including the piano black trim. The dashboard has been reshaped in some areas, to make it look less rounded, with a few flatter surfaces intended to give it more dynamism. A new, stylish steering wheel with steering-mounted audio and phone controls has been incorporated too. Unlike the earlier iteration of the Sunny, which had neither USB connectivity nor Bluetooth, Nissan has chosen not to leave anything out. This car completely dominates its segment when it comes to interior room; so much so, that Nissan engineers proudly proclaim it has as much interior room as a BMW 5 Series. Leg room and head room are truly class-leading, and the revised rear seat makes it the best mid-size sedan to be chauffeured in. The seat cushioning feels a touch firmer than before, and the seat squab itself is half an inch longer to afford better under-thigh support.

Nissan Sunny Engine

If you are one of those who never forget to carry a stopwatch during their drives, you can leave it at home for this one. The Push engine start key does its job in this one as well. The 2011 Nissan Sunny is not the one that can be termed as the driver`s delight. The Sunny is powered by a 1498 cc, 4 Cylinder, 16 Valves DOHC engine. The power figures are decent 99 PS @ 6000 rpm and a torque of 134Nm @ 4000 rpm.

These figures are not performance oriented, especially if power to weight ratio is considered. For every single bhp it pulls 10.32kgs which makes the car obviously sluggish. The mid range power delivery is not as impressive as its American rival. The gear shifts are not something which would go unnoticed. It`s on the harder side. We did some performance driving but were struggling to reach the top whack. What earns my thumbs up is the low range revving of the motor. At lower revs and at higher gears, The Sunny won’t struggle or knock. It maintains its own calm. The Mcpherson suspensions were not totally tested by us, but still we got a nimble response from it.

Nissan Sunny Driving

This is clearly a car for the laid back rear seats. But the well performing petrol and diesel engines request to be driven at least sometimes. Now you can not push this car along corners, because even though the steering is precise and has a light feel yet adequate feedback, the long body make the car fishtail. The suspension is soft and very well made for our Indian roads. No matter how may the ditch or undulations this car seems to dampen them very well. There is no shock or effect that filters through the seats. The NVH levels are also very low. These are clearly features of something you would find in cars way above 15 lakhs.

Nissan Sunny Safety

The Sunny XV is well equipped, with features like keyless entry, power windows on all four doors, electrically folding mirrors, a CD player, climate control, ABS, EBD, driver and passenger airbags and alloy wheels. The lower XL isn’t too bad either; you still get the CD player, power windows and all the safety kit, but it does without the alloy wheels, which otherwise add a much-needed dash of flair to the design. Both the XL and XV get an interesting feature – a rear seat air-circulation fan. The vents aren’t directly connected to the air-con but help circulate cool air faster. It’s the base XE that is poorly equipped. It doesn’t even get wheel caps and the hard, black interiors make it better suited for taxi duty. But even this basic model comes with ABS and a driver airbag.

Nissan Sunny Conclussion

The Sunny has always been the stepson of the segment, recommended to those who want value rather than features or snob value. No more, not with the features list that is now available with the Sunny. Nissan has gone for a relatively safe strategy and not offered a top-spec petrol (yet), instead preferring to promote the diesel. If Nissan manages to keep the 2014 Sunny within Rs 20,000 of its predecessor, it will make an extremely strong case for itself if you’re looking for an alternative to the segment’s usual picks, the Honda City and Hyundai Verna.
